What is it for?
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added so a reconstituted vial can be drawn from repeatedly without microbial growth. Use it for any vial that will be used over days or weeks. The vial is labelled Reconstitution Solution, which is the name this diluent is sold under; it is the same 0.9% benzyl alcohol bacteriostatic water described here. It arrives as a 30 mL multi-dose vial with a rubber stopper, aluminium crimp and flip-off cap, so the stopper can be swabbed and pierced repeatedly rather than opened once. For cell-culture work, sterile water or assay buffer is the better choice, as the blog post on benzyl alcohol explains. Not for use in neonates: benzyl alcohol has been associated with gasping syndrome in newborns, which is the reason preservative-free grades exist.
